Mathias Kessler in Prefix Photo Magazine

Mathias Kessler's work can be seen in the current issue of Prefix Photo magazine, issue 18. [http://www.prefix.ca] On the e-flux web release, Prefix editor Scott McLeod writes about the issue's theme of technology and the body. "In recent years the body has returned to contemporary art, though it is a body whose reconfiguration by technology has produced unexpected, radical - and sometimes perplexing - forms of representation." We agree - Terminator Salvation, anyone?

Josh Garber Phoenix Commission

Josh Garber has just completed a commission for the city of Phoenix. The piece is titled Lucent and it is 30 x 3 x 3 feet. Made out of Aluminum bar and fiber optics, this piece will provide a constantly changing presence for the residents of Phoenix. All four photos are by James L. Christy © 2008.

Miya Ando

Miya has had a wonderful year. On the heels of her successful solo exhibition at Anne Reed Gallery, Miya has received a number of prestigious commissions. She was selected to produce 144 works for a non-denominational chapel in New York City, and her work has been added to the collection of the former head priest of Daitoku-ji, Japan's most important Zen temple. She has also been commissioned to produce a large work for the Against the Stream Buddist Meditation Society/Dharma Punx in Los Angeles. The work will be unveiled Spring 2009.

You can see Miya in Nylon Magazine's December/January issue in an Element ad and in the television commercial for their Power to the Planet promotion. http://www.powertotheplanet.tv/video/

She was also interviewed for The Epoch Times Newspaper which will be translated into 10 languages.

Congratulations to Miya on such a productive and inspiring year!

Thomas Ostenberg 2008 in Review

2008 has been an exciting year for Thomas Ostenberg. It began with the news that his sculpture was being considered for the 2012 London Olympics. Wilfred Cass, who expects to finance as many as 50 new sculptures for the Olympics, was quoted as saying that London deserves to have great sculpture, yet much of the contemporary public art on display in the English capital was "rubbish". He considers Ostenberg's work to be ideal for the Olympics and will serve to enhance the London Public art scene as well. There is also a proposal being put forward for an Olympics-related exhibition at the Tate museum, with Ostenberg's name and sculpture being specifically mentioned. This group exhibition would occur in the time leading up to the 2012 Olympics, with the work exhibited at the Tate being placed around the city in time for the main events.

In the spring he received an invitation from the prestigious Glyndbourne Opera Festival in southern England to be their featured sculptor for the 2008 season. In previous years sculptors such as Antony Gormley and Tony Cragg had been featured artists.

Back in the States, two large pieces were acquired by the Seven Bridges Foundation, a private art museum located near Greenwich, Connecticut.

In September Ostenberg had two solo exhibitions in London, and also received the news that prestigious art historian and critic, Edward Lucie-Smith was interested in writing a book about him and his sculpture.

Ostenberg's first sculpture was received by the Cass Sculpture Foundation (formerly Sculpture at Goodwood), recognized as the UK’s most important sculpture park dedicated to British Sculpture.

All in all, 2008 was quite a year for Thomas Ostenberg, and we wish him even greater success in the New Year!

From Summer Into Autumn

As we glide into a warm, golden autumn here in the Wood River Valley, we pause to reflect on some of Anne Reed Gallery’s notable summer events and moments. It seems the frenetic—even if festive and rejuvenating—pace of summer makes the season race by ever faster, year after year. We saw many of our dear friends and loyal clients in the gallery during the last few months, often between forays into our trails and waterways, and we are so pleased to have a few moments to catch up. Thank you all for stopping in to see us!

We are happy to congratulate sculptor Fletcher Benton for receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the venerable International Sculpture Center at the beginning of the season. Gallery owner, Barbi Reed, was fortunate to be able to attend the awards ceremony in San Francisco, and to visit with Fletcher and his wife in his studio space in the city, and at their beautiful Napa home and garden. We have been thrilled to have three of his monumental works here in our sculpture garden, plus several more intimately scaled works in the gallery during the summer. What luck for all of you who were able to see these master works here and on the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference grounds near our fabulous new Sun Valley Pavilion. If your busy summer calendar kept you from visiting the gallery, be sure to come as soon as you can to see this wonderful collection of Fletcher’s work.

The City of Ketchum has been hard at work over the past two years redesigning our Fourth Street corridor into a wonderful promenade of wide walkways, trees, flowers, and artwork from local galleries and artists. Anne Reed Gallery was pleased to install two of Josh Garber’s fluid, organic sculptures along Fourth Street for the season, enticing tourists and locals alike to interact with a fascinating variety of works as they enjoy the many cafes and shops along our new pedestrian thoroughfare.

Katina Huston’s shadow drawings of bicycle elements took on a whole new appearance as they were translated through an on-site collaboration with Sweden’s Edition Vulfovitch and Jarla Grafik. Read more about her adventure in our “Artist News” as she shares the story of working with Igor Vulfovitch, and master printer John Akerlund “across four languages; Swedish, English, Russian, and Art.”

Anne Reed Gallery entered the peak of our busy summer season with an exhibition of Miya Ando’s serene works on steel. We congratulate Miya on receiving a public commission for 100 pieces to be installed in a non-denominational chapel in New York. Her work has also been added to the collection of the former head priest of Japan’s most important Zen temple, Daitoku-ji.

And so, it has been a whirlwind summer for the gallery and for our hardworking artists who continue to push the envelope of their vision and media. Come back to our blog often as we share more tidbits about life at the gallery, news about our artists, and events to keep on your radar. Thank you all, again, for your cherished support and affection.

Barbi Reed and Miya Ando Stanoff on PLUM TV

Anne Reed Gallery was thrilled to have work by New York artist Miya Ando Stanoff this month. Her brilliantly subtle works on steel create a meditative space that speaks to everyone regardless of age or cultural background.

Recently, Barbi and Miya were interviewed for Plum TV. To see Miya describe her background and how she came to be a "steelworker" the interview can be accessed at:

Charles Lindsay in Western Interiors & Design

We loved seeing Charles Lindsay's Upstream photographs grouped above a display of Navajo baskets in the dining room of Michael Keaton's home. The article is in the February/March issue of WI &D and includes many interiors of the actor's ranch-style California house. We don't know if Mr. Keaton is a fly fisherman, but Charlie's photographs will impress guests even if the closest they've ever gotten to a trout is at a trendy Hollywood restaurant.

Highlights of Early Spring

In spite of the calendar insisting that it is spring, the weather continues to exhibit winter tendencies covering our earliest bulbs with a skiff of snow every couple of days. Skiing on our beloved Baldy is finished for the season, but high country trails are still snowbound for the intrepid. For those of us anxious to move on, cycling on lower roads and paths is possible if riders layer enough clothing to protect from the cold wind. The gallery’s sculpture garden is finally visible again even though there is still snow in some places out there. Come by for an early season peek before a few of our favorites happily move on to new homes. In other springtime news, we’re happy to report the following good notes from some of our artists.

Boaz Vaadia
was featured in Art & Antiques magazine’s April issue. Look for him and his work in an in-depth article entitled Force of Nature by Dana Micucci. In June, you can find him in Sculpture magazine. We’re very proud of this hard-working sculptor and enormously pleased to represent him.

Painter Catherine Courtenaye contributed her ethereal paintings to The Bark magazine in April. Look for her works in the article Literary Dogs by D.L. Pughe, and also find her on the magazine’s Contributors’ Page with her Whippet, Tinto.

We’re thrilled to announce that Miya Ando Stanoff’s entrancing and soulful works on steel will come to the gallery in July. As will Miya! Be sure to come in and meet her. She is also concurrently showing at the Byzantine Museum in Thessoloniki, Greece. Her works are part of their Places and Manners of Worship exhibition, which runs through September.

Gallery News - A New Year!

Hello, everyone. This is Muffet Jones, Anne Reed Gallery's new director. I joined the staff last summer and shortly thereafter Barbi asked me to take on the position of Gallery Director which I was delighted to do. We have had an amazing few months - record snowfalls in the West have made it a banner year for guests to our area - and our blog has fallen behind in all the (very nice) furor. But now we're on the cusp of Spring and have a little time to catch our breath. This means that I will try to shoulder some of Barbi's burden on the ARG blog as well as in the gallery.

Helping me with this and other tasks will be the newest members of our team, Deb Gelet and Mary Corrock. Deb comes to us with invaluable experience both in gallery management and in public relations. She has been a successful freelance writer and magazine editor, and continues to write for many of the best Western art and design publications. Look for her cover article on the famous Sturdivant Garden of the Sun Valley area in the Spring edition of Western Art and Architecture. Mary began her arts career in 1979 working for the King County Arts Commission in Seattle which initiated the first "Percent for Art" program in the country. In Ketchum she has worked for the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and has brought her awesome organizational skills to bear on events like the Sun Valley Wine Auction and other important community happenings. With Jennie Buehler doing a fantastic job as registrar and Jorge Otzoy continuing as our wonderful art handler and facility manager, our team is ready to make 2008 the best yet for Anne Reed Gallery, our artists, clients and community!

Check back with us often - there will be fresh news on the art front from our outpost here in the mountains and from all over the world!

Plum TV Interviews Barbi Reed

Barbi Reed (B. Anne Reed) has been the owner of Anne Reed Gallery in Ketchum, Idaho, for over 25 years. She is also an accomplished photographer in her own right having studied with Lisette Model, who also taught Diane Arbus, in New York before moving to Ketchum. Barbi has traveled extensively to many of the poorest but most beautiful places on earth to record the very human faces she finds there in extreme circumstances. See Plum TV's interview with Barbi Reed and also see many of her wonderful photographs at:

Engaging Dystopia on Plum TV

Anne Reed Gallery's current exhibition, Engaging Dystopia, is a thought-provoking and visually exciting exhibition of artists responding to imminent ecological disaster. Joshua Jensen-Nagle creates poignant photographs of the animals with whom we share our world; Mathias Kessler brings stunning photographs of the shrinking ice flows of Greenland, and Mary Mattingly shares her vision of humans in a starkly beautiful new future. Plum TV covered the exhibition for its Earth Bytes segment. The entire story can be seen at: http://sunvalley.plumtv.com/stories/earth_bytes_engaging_distopia

For more information and images of all the work in the exhibition go to www.annereedgallery.com and select Current Exhibition.

Dan Rizzie on Plum TV

Dan Rizzie's work is a study in opposites: complicated yet very accessible, bright colors but lots of black, nature with a decidedly sophisticated turn. Get insight into the artist's process in this short interview done at his studio in the Hamptons for Plum TV. As an added bonus, you get to see his lovely dog.
